On June 23rd there will be a big decision to make - for all of us. The decision about whether to remain inside the EU or whether to go it alone.
Many residents have asked me what I will be doing. I have made up my mind and I will be voting to remain. I’ve given this a lot of thought. The EU is far from perfect. Too much money is spent on propping up agriculture and it is still too bureaucratic. But the risks of leaving, seem to me, to be too high.
Our economy depends on trade with the EU. Nearly half our exports go there and 3.5 million jobs are connected to it. Foreign investment in our businesses is boosted because of our access to the single market. Quite simply, remaining in Europe to me is fundamental; it’s about British jobs, jobs that put food on the table for families here.
I’m also a big supporter of the rights at work that have been secured; rights that I don’t believe our Government will replicate if we withdraw; safe working hours, annual leave, decent parental leave, protection for agency workers, and equal pay.
I know that some people are worried about immigration - and the impact of having people come and go does need to be dealt with. But if we leave the EU and negotiate a trade deal like Norway has we will still have to accept EU wide immigration to and from the UK.
