Ruth Cadbury MP has hailed the new Government’s legislative programme outlined in the Kings Speech as a ‘‘bold plan to restore our public services, grow our economy and tackle the cost of living crisis.’’
On Wednesday 17th July the Kings Speech was read out in Parliament detailing then new Labour Government’s agenda in Parliament over the next year.
The King’s speech included legislation to bring train companies back into public ownership, changes to the planning system to build high quality infrastructure and housing, reforms to the leasehold system, the strengthening of employment rights and the setting up of Great British Energy- a publicly owned renewable energy company.
Commenting in full after the King’s Speech Ruth Cadbury said,
‘‘I’m so pleased that the new Government have set out such a clear long-term plan that aims to tackle the huge issues facing people locally across Hounslow and Whitton. At the heart of this is a bold plan to restore our public services, grow our economy and tackle the cost of living crisis.
I’m particularly pleased that the Government have committed to address issues on which I have raised many times in Parliament before; such as reforming our outdated and antique leasehold system which has been disastrous for so many residents living in flats locally. The new legislation will ban the sale of new leasehold flats and will introduce a wider set of much needed reforms.
I’m also delighted to see changes to allow key infrastructure and new housing developments to be built quickly, while also strengthening the protections for those who rent. Every day I see the impact of the housing crisis locally with families living in cramped and poor quality accommodation, and this will make a huge difference.
After much campaigning locally against the actions of Thames Water I’m also pleased that there’s a new bill to put water companies under tough special measures, with independent monitoring of all sewage outlets.
Over the last 14 years I have seen firsthand how difficult life has become for people locally and it is welcome that so many of these challenges are being tackled by the new Government. I look forward to working closely with the Government and ensuring that people locally get a fair deal.’’
