Ruth Cadbury MP has branded the Governments new announcement on building safety and cladding as a ‘missed opportunity’ which she warns will see many leaseholders ‘facing huge and unaffordable costs’, and flat dwellers continuing to live in fear of fire.

In her full response to the announcement Ruth also raised her concerns over the limited focus and lack of action on wider building safety issues.

Speaking in full after the Government’s announcement Ruth Cadbury MP said,

‘‘For years now campaigners, residents and MPs have been urging the Government to fix the cladding and building safety scandal which is impacting many people across the country. I have been raising this on behalf of affected constituents ever since the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.

I know from listening to people locally how much anxiety and stress that this issue has caused, especially as these faults were not caused by leaseholders or residents.

While this announcement of new funding is to be welcomed, I’m very concerned that this is a missed opportunity. The new funding does not cover buildings below 18 metres, it does not cover non-cladding building safety issues and it will leave many leaseholders being forced to taken on debts to pay for the removal of unsafe cladding.

I will continue to urge the Government to ensure that leaseholders do not face excessive and unfair costs to fix fire safety faults. I will keep raising this with the Government and will keep urging the Government to do the right thing.’’
