Ruth Cadbury MP has joined neighbouring MPs in writing to the CEO of British Airways to call for 'urgent talks' with MPs to discuss job losses and redundancies at BA, while also urging British Airways and its parent company IAG to work with both trade unions and the Government to find a solution and mitigate job losses.
After reports that 12,000 British Airways staff could be made redundant Ruth co-signed a letter from Seema Malhotra MP, Rt Hon John McDonnell MP, Virendra Sharma MP, Rupa Huq MP, Tan Singh Desi MP and James Murray MP to the CEO of British Airway Alex Cruz.
Speaking after sending this letter Ruth said,
'I know from the dozens of emails I've received from local residents who work for BA just how worried they rightly are about any redundancies. Many of the people who've got in touch have worked for BA for many years and have been loyal, hardworking members of staff who have gone above and beyond for the BA- who are the UK's flag carrier airline.
With over 40,000 people currently employed by British Airways it serves a key role both for the UK wide economy but also for our local economy and community here in Hounslow.
That's why I joined four local MPs in asking for an urgent meeting with the CEO of BA while also urging BA to work with both the Government and trade unions.
It is vital that BA and its parent company IAG do everything possible to mitigate these job losses. Many local residents and families are already feeling very anxious and worried about the impact of the Coronavirus and this will only add to that.
Likewise I continue to remain concerned about other possible job losses from other companies based at Heathrow.
That's why I will keep working with colleagues both in Parliament and also within the local business community, local government and the trade union movement to help protect local jobs.''
