Speaking during a debate on the Environment Bill on Tuesday 26th January Ruth Cadbury MP has called the delayed bill a ‘missed opportunity’ and urged the Government to accept changes to the bill which would have toughed regulations around air pollution and chemicals.

In her contribution to the debate Ruth highlighted the work done locally by Hounslow Council to tackle air pollution and praised local projects such as Chiswick Oasis, a green wall separating St Mary’s and William Hogarth schools from the A4. Ruth also mentioned the need to improve the regulations of harmful chemicals such as Formaldehyde.

After the Government voted down any changes to the bill Ruth said,

‘‘I’m deeply disappointed that the Government have delayed this important bill but have also refused to accept the common-sense improvements to the bill offered by MPs from across Parliament.

I know from listening to local residents how rightly worried many people are about our environment- especially toxic air pollution. I made sure to sponsor changes to the bill which would have imposed legally binding limits on air pollution- which kills 4,000 Londoners every year. While we have made great progress locally in tackling air pollution I know that we need to be doing much more.

I will continue to work in Parliament to ensure that our Government are doing everything possible to protect our environment and to tackle the climate crisis facing the world.’’
