Ruth Cadbury MP votes for trade bill amendments to protect Environmental standards, Human Rights and Workers Rights.

On Tuesday 19th January Ruth Cadbury MP voted for a number of amendments to the Trade Bill which would have legally enshrined protections around workers’ rights, food and environmental standards and NHS patient data- while also ensuring Parliament and MPs could scrutinise and vote on future trade deals.

On top of this Ruth also voted for an amendment which would have allowed the High Court to block any trade bill with a country that is found to be committing genocide.

Speaking after the vote Ruth said,

‘‘Last night I voted to make sure that the Government does not use future trade deals to weaken workers’ rights or scrap food and environmental standards.

Unfortunately, the Government voted down these amendments and seems intent to push ahead with a bonfire of our hard-won rights.

I know from talking to people locally that they do not want to see our government using trade deals to fuel a race to the bottom.

It was also extremely upsetting that the Government continued to deny Parliament and MPs any meaningful role in future deals- other countries such as the US, Germany and Australia allow their elected representatives to scrutinise trade deals.

This suggests that this Government continues to oppose any oversight or transparency because they want to push ahead with a deeply damaging race to bottom.’’
