Ruth calls for extra mental health support

On Tuesday Ruth Cadbury MP urged the Health Secretary Matt Hancock to recognise and address the increase in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among NHS and care workers as well as patients and bereaved families. She demanded that the Government invest in immediate as well as long-term mental health treatment as the country continues to battle against the coronavirus.

Speaking after her question Ruth said,

''The Sunday Times photo article about West Middlesex hospital showed clearly the emotional impact of the virus on frontline health and care staff as well as patients and their families .

That is why it's so important the Government invests in additional mental health support now to be able to respond to the increase in PTSD and other mental health pressures this virus has brought. It has deeply affected health and care workers, who often don't seek help when they need to. And it's affected those who have not been able to be with their loved ones in their final hours, nor to grieve properly with friends and family .

I'm pleased that the Health Secretary Matt Hancock agreed with my point that we need both immediate and long-term investment in Mental Health treatment for all those affected.

I will be writing to the Government urgently to follow this up and I look forward to working constructively to ensure that our frontline health staff and all those affected get the support they need.''
