Ruth calls for restoration of early legal advice

In the House of Commons yesterday Ruth Cadbury MP called on the Government to restore early legal advice for cases involving housing, debt, and welfare cases. Speaking in the Chamber, Ruth pointed out that a report by the Citizens Advice Bureau showed that for every £1 pound spend on legal advice for housing, the government could save over £2 later. Ruth also asked the Government to carry out independent research into the savings that could be made by the government if they returned early legal help as an element of legal aid.

In response to Ruth's Question, Justice Minister Lucy Frazer said that the Government was set to announce its review into legal aid by the end of 2018. Back in April 2018 Shadow Secretary of State for Justice Richard Burgon announced that Labour would restore legal aid for advice in all housing cases.

Speaking after her appearance in the House of Commons Ruth Cadbury said ''it's clear that the Government need to restore early legal advice, and undo the sweeping cuts to legal aid that they've imposed. I've met countless constituents who've been let down by rogue landlords, or refused access to vital benefits, but they've been unable to access legal aid, and can't get the justice they deserve. I'll continue to hold the government to account, and push them to restore early legal advice.''
