Statement on travel in Hounslow

Ruth Cadbury MP said:

"It’s simply unacceptable that the Government quietly published new guidance regarding travel in Hounslow without telling either the council, the director of public health, the borough’s two MPs or the public.

"Neither were Hounslow Council informed last Wednesday when Hounslow was added to a list of local authority areas of concern, nor told why, nor what that meant for the Council and local NHS services. So they just got on with ramping up surge testing and vaccination despite receiving no guidance or additional funding.

"Twice in a week we have been kept in the dark here and residents are still waiting for answers about this guidance.

"We are urgently trying to find out further information from the Government on this absolute farce of a situation- you cannot expect to isolate and cut off one borough in London, especially in the case of Hounslow where key links from Heathrow and the west run through it on the Piccadilly and Waterloo rail lines, the A4 and A316.

"I was pleased that the Shadow Health Secretary Jonathon Ashworth and Seema Malhotra MP both raised this issue directly in Parliament today and made clear how damaging this latest failure in communications is from the Government.
Residents in Hounslow and across the country and their elected representatives simply deserve better than this."
